The creator of the series has revealed that the Targaryens are going to see the biggest challenge they have ever faced in the new spin-off series of the 'Game of Thrones' franchise. George R.R. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a series based on George R. R. Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novels. It serves as a prequel to HBO's blockbuster series Game of Thrones.
The series is set to air on HBO in January 2026. The story takes place nearly 90 years before the events of Game of Thrones. The Targaryens, one of the most powerful families in the franchise who rose to power with dragons, will feature prominently in the series. Peter Claffey will play Ser Duncan the Tall, while Dexter Sol Ansell will play his squire Egg.
A Rule Without Dragons: A Threat to Power
Showrunner Ira Parker spoke about the challenge facing the Targaryens in a new interview with EW (Entertainment Weekly). With the death of the last dragon 50 years later, the dragon power that was their main asset to power has been lost. Parker said that this has somewhat tarnished the Targaryens' reputation.

"With the rise of Dunk, we're 50 years after the death of the last dragon. And it wasn't even that great of a dragon. It was kind of a wimp, and it couldn't fly. If it couldn't fly, what would it really be? Just a fancy lizard," Parker commented.
Parker said, "They've lost what kept them in power (the dragon). It's a precarious position to be in. Fifty years after the dragons were gone, people are starting to ask, 'Why are they still in power?'" he said.
Struggle to Retain Power
The Targaryens usually don't care about the small town in the middle of the Reach. But now, Parker made it clear, "they have to do it to show they're still in power." The Targaryens' desire to prove their power and dominance, without dragons, will be a central theme of the series.
Fans are hoping that this will provide a more interesting look at the events leading up to the events of 'Game of Thrones'. HBO is hoping that the series will be as successful as 'House of the Dragon'.
