Following in Superman's footsteps, his cousin Kara Zor-El is also preparing for her adventure in the DC Universe (DCU). The upcoming 'Supergirl' film, which is scheduled to arrive in 2026, will be the main attraction in the James Gunn-led DCU 'Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters' slate. Milly Alcock, who plays Kara Zor-El, will be appearing in this reboot from the beginning, along with her cousin David Corenswet, who plays the Man of Steel.

The new film is coming at a time when it has been 41 years since 'Girl of Steel' appeared in her own film. Helen Slater last played the title role in 1984. Millie Alcock of House of the Dragon fame has been cast as the beloved superhero on January 29, 2024. Craig Gillespie of I, Tonya fame is directing the film.

'Woman of Tomorrow' Plot: Dark Theme

Ana Nogueira, who wrote the script for 'Supergirl', recently spoke to Variety about her role as the last daughter of Krypton. "She saw Krypton completely destroyed," the former actress-writer said. "I always thought 'I couldn't understand this version of the character, who was so happy.'"

However, she said she found what she was looking for in the comic book series 'Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow' written by writer Tom King. The story, which ran for eight issues from August 2021 to April 2022, features Kara Zor-El as "tough, serious, sharp, and funny." "When I read it, I was like, 'She's here,'" Nogueira said.

James Gunn previously explained that, having witnessed the destruction of Krypton, she would be a more inert and tough Supergirl than her cousin, and that Kryptonians, who are powered by sunlight, would go to planets with red suns and drink alcohol and get dizzy.

According to the plot, while traveling across the galaxy with her dog Krypto on her 21st birthday, Kara meets Ruthye Marye Knoll, a young woman who is seeking revenge on the murderer who killed their father.

DCU debut, release date confirmed

Millie Alcock already made her DCU debut in the film 'Superman'. She came to pick up her dog Krypto at the end of that film and shared a short conversation with David Korenswet's Man of Steel, paving the way for her upcoming solo film in 2026. The Australian actress wrapped principal photography on the film on May 10, 2025.

Characters from Tom King’s comics, notably Cream of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts) and Ruthie Marie Noll (Eve Ridley), will make their first live-action appearances in Allcock’s project. King, along with James Gunn, is one of the architects of the DCU, and is also working on the HBO series ‘Lanterns’ and the animated show ‘Mister Miracle’ for DC Studios.

Jason Momoa, who played ‘Aquaman’ in the previous franchise, will appear as ‘Lobo’ in this DCU sci-fi film. ‘Supergirl’ is set to hit theaters on June 26, 2026. With her tough background, Millie Allcock's Supergirl is sure to impress audiences with a new perspective, different from what Melissa Benoist (2015-2021 TV show) and Sasha Calle (2023 'The Flash') have previously portrayed.
