The making of the biggest hit 'Avatar' franchise in film history is set to go behind the scenes. Just days after actress Zoe Saldaña recently dropped a hint, the Disney+ streaming platform has officially announced the documentary 'Fire and Water: Making The Avatar Films'. It has also released a trailer for it.
The documentary will premiere on Disney+ on November 7. Exactly six weeks later, on December 19, James Cameron's latest adventure film set in the world of Pandora, 'Avatar: Fire and Ash', will hit theaters. As the title suggests, the documentary chronicles the making of 2022's Avatar: The Way of Water, while also providing a glimpse into the upcoming production of Fire and Ash.

This official trailer focuses mostly on the making of The Way of Water. The footage shown is mostly from the 2022 film. While Avatar is a visual effects (VFX)-heavy franchise, the documentary emphasizes that the film's production team based everything they see on screen on real-world efforts. It will also feature a detailed look at the performance-capture work of Zoe Saldana and other actors.
Performance-capture has always been a hot topic in the production of Avatar. Zoe Saldana's performance as Neytiri, in particular, has been praised, but has not received awards recognition due to debates about how much of the performance was the actors' work and how much was computer-generated.
Zoe Saldana recently pushed for a documentary, which she said would "give us a chance to explain that performance-capture is the most powerful form of acting. It gives us 100% ownership of our performance on screen."

The original Avatar, released in 2009, is the highest-grossing film of all time, with $2.92 billion worldwide. Avatar: The Way of the Wild is third on the list with $2.34 billion. Both films are streaming on Disney+. A Disney+ subscription is required to watch the Fire and Water documentary, which will be available starting November 7.
The upcoming film 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' will take the story of the Sully family forward. They face a new, aggressive Na'vi tribe. This tribe is led by a fierce and dangerous leader. The film stars a big star cast including Saldana, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, and Kate Winslet.
